After months of being undecided as to whether she would seek re-election to Greater Shepparton City Council, deputy mayor Fern Summer announced this month she had decided to stand again.
Ms Summer says placing ‘‘fourth overall’’ as an independent candidate in July’s federal election for the seat of Murray has been a strong boost to her self-confidence.
She says with four years’ experience as a councillor, including time as deputy mayor, she would ‘‘hit the ground running’’ if re-elected.
Ms Summer says she has been involved in establishing Shepparton’s first off-leash dog park and she was the only councillor to have spoken against the Shepparton Art Museum.
She says if re-elected she would take a more conciliatory approach on the council.
‘‘The last year has in my opinion, been fraught with personal politics,’’ she said. ‘‘I got quite disillusioned, I wasn’t being as effective as I thought I could be.’’
Cr Summer says while she ‘‘stepped on a few toes’’, she has become an effective representative who can deliver better community outcomes.
